LP TechShield is an OSB roof decking that is factory coated with an aluminum (silver) coating on the bottom side. The silver coating is called a radiant barrier and is highly effective in stopping the sun’s rays from heating up the home’s interior by reflecting the solar rays back towards the sun. The important fact of solar radiant barriers is that there needs to be a 1″ or greater air space away from the aluminum surface to the sub-roof deck for the reflection to occur. The SmartRoofDeck (SRD System) provides a 1.5″ air space which is optimal for a radiant barrier. The radiant barrier is installed as the upper roof deck and the silver side faces down towards the 1.5” air channels created by the sleepers.

The SRD System is a terrific roof system that works with all permeable, non-foam insulation products that allow moisture permeability inside the building’s attic rafter spaces or cathedral ceiling under the sub-roof deck. No insulation baffles are required or needed because the new air channel is above the moisture permeable sub-roof deck and sub-underlayment which is outside the building envelope keeping the interior of the building away from the environmental elements at all areas. This SRD Roof System makes it very easy to retrofit an existing roof that has insulation stuffed against the existing roof deck or if you are building new homes or commercial complexes. This SRD Roof System works on low pitched roof systems as well as steep slope roof systems.
